Here is a handy little piece of test equipment for checking the health of  transistors and diodes.  This is a Sencore model TR-C4.  This is a small unit that coud easily fit in your toolbox or on your repair bench.  It comes with the instruction manual clipped to the back side of the checker.  It measures about 5" X 3" X 6".
